I think you mean they couldn't do it using the current license. The  
point I was making wasn't anything to do with that (though the  
precedent of closed source drivers in the Linux kernel does imply it  
might be possible, with Linden Labs' approval). Rather, what I wrote  
was that there's no reason to assume that *just because Linden Labs  
picked the GPL* that means they wouldn't support such a thing  
(whether by dual-licensing the code, adding another exemption, or  
merely establishing a policy as Linus has), as the person I was  
responding to was implying.

And I think that Phoenix Linden's response is in line with that.
