P.S. Whilst working on this, I found that the obvious edit to floater_my_friends.xml (namely can_tear_off="false" to can_tear_off="true") does allow you to tear off the Contact's tab. Its workable although there are some issues which need coding to resolve.
I didn't go far down this route as if you have torn off the Chat window and aren't actually in an IM conversation, you end up with a very empty window!
The torn off Contact window if you make it thin and tall shows why tabs on the left hand side are a bad idea!
