[sldev] Why is LLVOAvatar::sNumVisibleAvatars always 0?

It looks as though that number should get updated in
LLVOAvatar::updateAllAvatarVisibility(). That would be a good first
point of investigation for whether that counter is being used.
For a nearby list, you might look at Dale Glass' avatar scanner patch.
I think he's already done much of the work you're after. You can find
links to that by searching this list's history.
