As the bard said, "Aye, there's the rub."  SL open source compiles on 
VS2003.  I have VS6, VS2005 Express, and I could get VS2008 Express if I 
dared.  I, too, am used to having open source actually compile.  It only 
compiles on the one I (and I imagine many other developers) don't have.

You say "patch or leave."  I would love to patch.  I can't even compile 
without hacking the project files for every new release.  After doing it 
a few times, you just get tired of it.

Yes, I am excited that CMake will make my life easier.  Yes, I am 
excited that Bryan is working on it.  And grateful, too.  But it's just 
ever so tantilizingly out of reach.  Frustration.  Yep, that's what I'd 
call it.
