Eh, for the curious, Eddy Stryker/jhurliman told me what to do:

do webpage login. Replace the "password", md5_password key/value pair in 
the login lxmlrpc call with "web_login_key" and the UUID from the output 
of that login, and do the same xmlrpc call as before.
