My understanding was that, that would be an optional way of logging onto SL in addition to logging on within the client. 

It had better be optional - we've already rehearsed many of the problems that the logon via web page approach will cause particularly if you have alts, logon to different grids, have multiple versions of the client installed, are testing new client builds, run the client with different commandline options, run the client with different OS options (e.g. I have icons for startng the client with different processor affinities), etc. and that before we get onto all the security/safety loopholes!

Here's wishing LL a sudden revelation of common sense in 2008 ;-)
