We've heard rumors that jasper was pretty good these days, but our  
tests several years ago showed it was very slow so we thought we  
would try openjpeg as the alternate. It would not be too hard to make  
an llimagej2cjasper project which exported an llimagej2c  
implementation to see if it was better.

We plan on revving the c++ api at least once in the future to make it  
more detached from the rest of the project like llmozlib.
