Now that SL has introduced the world to concept of a personal avatar (as
opposed to being an orc or warlock), what is the general view of being
able to have one av that I take into various worlds; SL to Sims Online to
Entropia, etc?

I'm not suggesting that accounts span virtual worlds, only that my pixel
representation be able to move from world to world.

In that vein, imagine that there was a business of creating avs for
people.  Imagine further that this business could create a portable av
actually looked like me:

If there was a portable me wouldn't I be willing to invest more in that av
than the sum of what I invest in all my world-specific avs?
