Well, I'm nothing if not persistent, and I was able to use the mute list
functionality as it currently exists to sort of do what I want. It's not a
particularly pretty solution, and it has limitations, but it works at least
for testing purposes.

I think that it would be useful to have a standard mechanism to store
per-user viewer state, similarly to Qarl's suggestion of being able to store
per-object state. Even something as simple as a pair of a UUID and a string
(of up to 255 chars) would be fantastic. I'll submit a feature request in
JIRA and everyone can argue with me about it there. :)
