[sldev] updated patch for VWR-423

Hello all,

Based on previous feedback from Nicholaz Beresford and Alissa Sabre, I cleaned up the code changes and then learned a lot more about using a command line diff :) I think I've thoroughly tested this patch but I have a question.

How do I delete the other files from jira? I only want the vwr423.patch file to be used. Also if anyone wants to try out the patch, please let me know your experience and of course any/all feedback is welcome.
