Note that PIII's of up to 1.4ghz were made. Personally I have a laptop
with a Celeron 1.3, which is based on a PIII core. It manages to crank
out ~3fps with a few avatars on screen, the limiting factor seems to be
more the 5 year old Intel 830M video, which is severely fill rate
limited, than the CPU.

Additional avatars of course quickly kill the framerate, even on my
fastest machines...
