Uh, Linux stopped doing that about 2005, if I recall correctly part of
the bitkeeper parting-of-ways changed it to every kernel is "stable
enough", and downstream packagers get to worry about what level of
stable they need to worry about.

I guess GTK still does it though. And Gnome.

I guess this'd be OK too, but it certainly makes things a little harder
on the repository user, since the thing branches into, say,
branch-for-1-18, but it's version is 1.17 until tagged stable.
