I got the impression that this was mostly a matter of picking the  
right compiler flags, rather than a significant amount of recoding.

If you can get a 30% performance boost from that, then generating  
multiple binaries is a no-brainer.

If we're talking about actually changing code, I absolutely agree  
there's better places to start.

(getting some of this open-source attention on the server code, for  
example)
