Dang ... with a repro I would have found this much earlier.  I had just
seen it from post mortem crashes and couldn't figure out what it was
(I suspected it was free'd memory but through the tricky implementation
missed the stop() function in error()).

Guess I'll send a list of my other crime scenes here shortly in case
someone can provide parts of the puzzle.
