Well, I agree about the open source part :)   I think that makes 100%
sense for everyone involved.

However, open source != free, from where I sit.   Specifically, there
is patent coverage and terms and conditions on server emulation which
keeps SL from being 'free'.   A client is cool, but not really free if
you can't use it without connecting to the SL grid.

Which I think makes *perfect* sense!

SL requires the guidance of Linden Lab at this juncture, and it's
critical that we support them in that role.   I worry there isn't
enough focus from us folks on how to do that, which is what is why
legal is being so cautious at this point..
