Being "opened up" is not really an option.
If you violate the GPL you have violated copyright law. No one can force
you to comply with the GPL, as you are not contractually bound by it. You
could be sued for monetary damages and for injunctive relief in terms of
ceasing the damaging action.
It's a myth pushed by people like MS that the GPL can somehow "force" you to
open your code.
