I don't know what all went into the codec evaluation, though I
understand there was a thorough evaluation.  I know that the engineering
work has pretty much been done, and that we can't just pitch it and
start over.  So, in answer to your demand that we "dump this crap": no.

We're a company in transition from a proprietary software provider to
being an open source software provider, but this isn't going to happen
overnight.  We need to make the transition in a way where we don't sink
the company or compromise the quality of the product in the process.

As Joe said, we're still figuring out how to not make this a problem for
GPL licensees.
