[sldev] Reviewing/Fixing the Particle System

One thing my wife showed me and I notice is still there.  The particle
system works better on our older PC's then it does on our new Dual Core
systems.

On my new dual core system, sometimes I don't even see the particle system.
Even when no other systems are around.  On the older machine it works fine.
