Isn't there an open-source SL proxy? Couldn't that be used to access
SL from behind the firewall?

Speaking as a former "you'll need to convince me to open ports"
admin, if you could hand me an open source proxy simple enough to
eyeball-verify[1] I'd be a lot more willing to run that than open ports.

If SL can run Socksified (native, or with the Hummingbird Socks
socket redirector) that's another option.

[1] preferably one that ran native on UNIX in Tcl, Python/Ruby, C, or
Perl (in decreasing order of preference), but that's going to depend
on the admin.
