Why do they need to be defeated?

Currently it's pretty much impossible to accidentally set land for sale.
The seller has to go through multiple steps that are impossible to do
accidentally.

So by now all the land on sale must have been intentionally set for
sale. If that's the case, does it matter who or what buys it?
