If my memory serves (and once in a while it does) the sweet spot for
contrast for prolonged reading is 80%. Too much above or below that mark
leads to premature visual fatigue due to excessive or insufficient
stimulation in the medulla's visual columns. There's some individual
variance, of course, neural activation baselines differing somewhat from
person to person, but 80% is about the mark you want to hit by default.
