Is there a tutorial somewhere on how to use a wiki for conversation? In
my e-mail client I have a threaded discussion view, new chat is pushed
in to my inbox in realtime, I can apply filters to move things to my
trash or highlight threads and messages, and manually tag threads and
messages. I don't know how to do any of this with a wiki. To make
matters worse, whenever I read a wiki it is directed at a general
audience of "the reader", so when two people on the same page are
disagreeing they never address each other directly and instead try to
persuade the general reader that the other person doesn't know what they
are talking about.

I agree!

On talk pages some people indent when replying and some people use line
breaks, some people sign their comments and some don't (or forget).
People might post something at the top of the page, the bottom, start a
new section in the middle, and there is nothing tying everything
together to give you a feel of the timeline. Without reading through
every diff in the history it is hard to see who said what, and peoples
comments often get changed or deleted and lost unless you are in the
habit of reading through every changelog for every wiki page you read.
