Um, this has nothing to do with intel. Any byte addressed machine  
EVER needs this kind of code if you're laying out mixed data types  
into a block of memory. 68000, Power, Alpha, Sparc, what computer are  
YOU thinking of that doesn't have alignment requirements?

If you're thinking about the pointer size, well, that's still not an  
intel issue.
