Maybe they can, maybe they can't. There will no doubt be a variety of  
schemes, from places that are run similar to Wikipedia where  
everyone's IP is there to dig up, through places where your IP  
address is logged by only disclosed to the person whose blog you're  
commenting on, and ones where your IP address is nobody's business  
but your own.

There's really no alternative for the existing Linden grid. The  
content creators won't stand for anything else. There will be other  
grids, other subgrids, even other Linden grids.
