It's not all that strange.  I think you are just thinking about it more 
from the screwed up way it's implemented now, rather than the user side 
of things.

One-on-one IMs always work that way (from the user's perspective), even 
in most IRC clients.  It's just extending that idea in a straightforward 
and innovative (I think) way.

There's no reason we can't keep that model, as you said, it can be 
purely a display thing.  It can stay a display thing if we migrate to a 
Jabber/IRC backend too.

There's plenty of groups with infrequent chat that I may want to hear 
when I'm on, but I may not want to crap up my UI with those dozens of 
inactive channel tabs.  We've got a lot less screen real estate to work 
with than the average chat client.
