There are not really two bands, the tabs are nested. When the  
"Contacts" tab is not selected, you don't have what you're referring  
to as the second "band" at all.

I suppose you could have a separate "groups" tab, with your group  
chat sessions nested under that.

I suppose I should not have brought up gmail, because it seems to  
have caused a certain amount of confusion.

All I meant is that there is no reason the user's email address needs  
to be the Jabber ID that a Jabber-based IM would use, and there are a  
number of user-expectation and privacy reasons why it shouldn't be.
