That's a slight modification, and would certainly work (with, again,  
the caveat that I don't want ANYTHING on the left, I want proper  
nested tabs like you get if you make the change in VWR-1549 and  
replace "left" with "bottom" in the "my friends" panel).

Perhaps the best would be to have, at the top level, "Contacts",  
"Nearby", "Groups", "Users", and group chat nested under groups, user  
chat nested under users, and everything but the "Contacts" tab  
supporting tear-off. That way you could segregate group and user  
chat, segregate chat windows (wide) from contact windows (tall), and  
organize things any way you damn please.
