As for open source fraps equivalents, I personally like "recordmydesktop",
available on both gnome and kde as "krecordmydesktop"
and "gtk-recordmydesktop".
I agree with the "provide a streaming interface", then we can just record with
VLC or ffmpeg and get on with it.
