During last week's meeting, one of the things that was discussed was
LL's attendance of open-source related conferences. It would be
interesting to discuss what LL and Residents could do to encourage the
organisers of such events to simulcast their event in-world (think along
the lines of the Open Source display Baba Yamamoto organised for SL4B).

Recently I've been forced to use SLeek as a means of accessing Second
Life- if I use the LL viewer, my system freezes.
I found that the text-only interface would be hypothetically superior to
the LL viewer in terms of accessibility to blind or partially sighted users.
Two reasons why accessibility in SL is important:
1) the Viewer is to SL as Firefox is to the Internet (see the 2007 Open
Source Awards:
http://radar.oreilly.com/archives/2007/07/oscon_open_sour_1.html )
2) Most countries have legislation which creates an obligation to
service providers that their service be accessible to disabled users. If
a company can be sued for having an inaccessible website, this might put
them off using SL due to the lack of (perceived or actual) accessibility.

This concern was initially raised via my questions regarding the use of
the mapapi.net wiki, but I've expanded it to cover a more general scope:
If a Linden comes across a technique that can be applied to Second Life,
what factors control whether Linden Lab implements a technique
(uBrowser), licenses a technique (fmod ?) or acquires the technique
(WindLight)
