I didn't think this was veering off the original documentation topic,
which is why I posted it as a reply to Rob's original post.

After backtracking and essentially starting over with the compile
instructions, I see that the problems I've been having are due to more
of my Visual Studio n00bishness. I have learned a valuable lesson:

1. Don't try to edit the source by opening a single *.vcproj file vs
opening the entire "indra_complete.sln".

2. While you can certainly open individual project files and edit them
that way, if the all the projects aren't loaded together as part of a
single solution then symbol browsing doesn't work across all the
projects and Visual Studio can't tell you what is wrong or how to fix
it..

At some point I got off on the wrong track of downloading the source,
opening just the "linden\indra\newview\newview.vcproj" and then going
to the Build menu to try and compile the viewer.. which excludes all
the other projects from the build attempt and of course (as I now
realize) it fails horribly in ways no one here has ever seen before..
oops.
