YES!  ten years ago i made a pretty penny writing a bunch of shaders  
which compensated for bad math in non-linear color spaces.

but the effect is very subtle.  it's most noticeable in reflections  
off water... i don't think it's responsible for our posterization  
problem in highly compressed images.  i think that's all JPEG2000's  
doing.
