The sim "First Look Isle" might be useful as a tool here.  The
instructions located there might be a little too much for casual
comparison, though (it seems very rigorous, asking you to back up
settings and reinstall SL).  IIRC, the sim was set up while they
tested a redone rendering pipeline, and it seems to still be
available.
