Among other things, the other ports predated the SDL port?

Other possibilities: the SDL port is newer, and possibly less stable,  
and since it's just another layer over the regular API on Mac and  
Windows it will almost certainly add *some* overhead to calling the  
native API directly. And it's not like SL has CPU cycles to burn.
