Agreed.  I've started this:

Even though it's in my user space, feel free to edit brutally.  The idea
is to make this version the new "Get source and compile" page after some
radical fixups.

Quicktime SDK should be optional.  If it's required, it's a bug, and
should be filed as such (under "VWR" with component: "Source code")

Thanks for struggling through!  Hopefully, we can use your input to make
the process smoother.
