Re: " a great example of this is the ESC's viewer which reskinned the entire viewer, removed
huge chunks of the old viewer and split in both old functionality in new ways and brand new functionality..."

Glad you mentioned this example, as it is a perfect illustration of my point. The ESC viewer, for which LL was paid a license fee, is optional. Yet had it been used by the original "million signups," it would have had a dramatic impact on the world and its economy and would have driven traffic specifically to ESC-advertised properties welded into the viewer, and would have essentially been a way for one large company to buy the economy and skew it. That didn't happen merely because the CBS show didn't get that many sign-ups.

More to the point, however, the ESC viewer contained a nerfing of SEARCH that got rid of the search button at the bottom completely, replacing it with a search box at the top, so that reaching tabbed searches couldn't happen except with three separate clicks -- the search box gives you SEARCH ALL which is a huge grab bag. And it was precisely that bad model for SEARCH that ended up today in the Lindens' viewer -- they copied it wholesale. The only thing is they left the vestiges of the old search button on the bottom so that it's not quite as crippling a situation as the ESC viewer, which I heavily critiqued for this reason.
