[sldev] [AWG] Question: Replacing current group chat with XMPP?

Apologies for chiming in so late on this thread. It's now tagged as
[AWG] for filtering.

The introduction to SLim did not imply any change in roadmap for OGP.
As Joe stated earlier SLim was designed to "support SL group channels
and proximal voice channels, both of which are fairly unique
communication abstractions for Second Life." While there are text
components to SLim, it primarily addresses the voice components of
Second Life.

The Open Platform team is working on the longer term solution of using
standard protocols to enable interoperable, scalable messaging across
virtual worlds.
Dale Innis' wiki page does an awesome job capturing discussion on this
topic: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Dale_Innis/Group_IM_in_OGP.

We also recognize that there is a great deal of interest in Jabber/XMPP
as a solution for chat both on the Second Life Grid and for
interoperation with other virtual worlds. There is, as RobLa pointed out
earlier, a PJIRA task for this:
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-419. However, there are specific
concerns that XMPP alone is not sufficient for the existing and proposed
use cases:

* XMPP as a backend solution to Group Chat has not been proven to scale
* Authentication & identity needs to work across all grids with all
services (search, resource discovery, commerce, and currency.) How does
JabberID map to use cases of existing UUID?
* Are we talking about XMPP as a general solution to messaging or just
for chat?
* On the client -> server side, adding XMPP to OGP on the client is a
little heavy because we would need XMPP stacks

With these thoughts in mind, please join us at the AWG meeting tomorrow
where the topic will be "Solutions to Interoperble Chat."
