Hmm, with only two layers that's going to be pretty limited, just a
HUD layer and the world view with some depth separation. Even with
more layers you're still stuck with a small set of discreet planes
with a fixed offset from each other, a bit like flat stage scenery. It
also won't be able to occlude properly, you can't have something light
coloured in front of something dark.
Unless someone takes a massive leap forward in LCD optical
transmission efficiency it's going to need some sort of insane nuclear
powered backlighting assembly, as LCDs already have horrible optical
efficiency, typically around 5%. (I used to work in the design of LCD
backlighting systems :)
It will probably find some use in arcade machines with a clearly
defined foreground and background scene. Or it could make for some
interesting user interfaces by popping stuff that needs attention
forward out of the background, for safety or time critical stuff in
industrial / medical applications.
Aimee.
