Neither.

Ater seding the last message, I found that the cause of the problem I
experienced was:

- Several files were moved from slviewer-artwork-*.zip file to
  artwork-common-*.tar.bz2 file, somewhere between r1928 and r2048 (in
  public svn trunk.)

- The new artwork-common-*.tar.bz2 file is listed in install.xml (in
  the trunk source tree) with other 3rd party libraries.

- I tried a standalone build, so install.xml was not used and some
  artwork files were missing.

Does this mean the contents of the artwork-common file will soon be
included in major Linux distributions as a standard package? :-)

I filed this issue, modified by new findings, as VWR-12708 on JIRA.
