This sounds like you have no idea what is the problem.

I'm assuming the latter, and therefore would like to remark that it probably
does NOT require a major rewrite of the baking system.

Clearly, the same video memory is being used for the desktop redraw as is
being used for the baking and some race condition (wrong locking?) is causing
this to sometimes happen.
