I would suggest searching all the source code for occurrences, add a small
comment next to it that says "function foo renamed by Aimee <email> Jan 2009
to new name bar" and then go ahead and change it.

This way if someone goes looking for the old name in the code they will find
your note. After it's been like that for a while (a year or more) and LL's
development people are used to the new naming, the change notification
comments can be removed.
