I expect most linux users to use libcurl3-cares version 7.18.2.
For a start, libcurl doesn't work very well (major hickups),
you have to use libcurl3-cares, which isn't in debian. It is
provided by Robin Cornelius for debian (which is at version 7.18.2).

I understood that Gentoo has all packages needed, so probably
also this one, but it would surprise me a lot if it wasn't at
that version too :p.

So yes, a threading issue that got solved between 7.16.4
and 7.18.2 seems a good possibility, or else it would be the
-cares part.
