Hello all, I have started an issue to address how open source viewers
interact with SL servers.
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-14778
My concern involves the injection of malicious code as well as the ability
for people to refactor source code to (per LL's TOS) illegally export
content that does not otherwise belong to the individual exporting it.
I hold that the lack of checks and balances is a huge bug. Some disagree.
Yet none have provided a counter argument (outside of, well, people will
steal, anyway). Unfortunately, yes, they will. However, like real life, we
still attempt to deter theft and punish thieves when caught. In the real
world, said deterence methods are known as "crime hardening." Most of you
would recognize these methods. For example, security cameras, theft
detection devices, etcetera. These, of course, will never guarantee against
theft, however they do tilt the scales in your favor.
Well such scale tilting is all that I am proposing here. And less people
immediately see this as no big deal? Wait till someone releases a viewer
that bypasses the new adult content restrictions that have been put into
place. LL, I am sure, has spent a rather pretty penny implementing that
system.
In other words, my referral to the lack of checks/balances wrt open source
viewers connecting to the grid, is indeed a gaping hole. That, if LL does
nothing about, will come back to bite them in the future.
Just sayin....
