The magic of analog to digital conversion of voice is performed by the
Codec. There are a number of opensource alternative codecs available,
but they are far from optimum for very specific use cases.

As an example, a cellphone may carry at least 3 different codecs and
the appropriate one is selected based upon the quality of the digital
link which can be established to a base station. Suffice it to be
said, I am not aware of a single cell phone manufacturer that uses an
open source codec as a default.

On the other hand VOIP, RTP, SIP, and the associated signalling is
very well documented in a number of RFC's which are an open operating
environment. One example of an opensource platform which can be used
as a PBX is Asterix (http://www.asterisk.org/).

Conferencing (aka, SL voice implementation) over VOIP has a number of
different signalling methods in order to establish and maintain a
voice channel. What would be nice is to have documented the SLViewer's
requirements : Sim --> Viewer --> Vivox Daemon interface. Publication
of the conferencing API expected by the SL viewer could facilitate
open source developers the opportunity understand and optimize the
viewer where possible.

Can we have the apporpriate LL developers update the public wiki with
this type of information? They were involved with the viewer
modifications and integration in order to support the Vivox daemon.
Their notes on the viewer integration effort would be beneficial for
open source developers to understand the interfaces to the new
software components which are not open source.
