Hmm.
I didn't know this page until now, but several questions came in my
mind when I read it:
- This discussion page and its associated Project:I18n page are
written entirely by one resident in a few days, then never be
updated again for six months.
- The page says there are a lot of internationalization related
projects under go (in Feb.), and there is a group working on that,
but nothing seems to have occured since then.
- Can we rely on the information at all?
The basic idea regarding translated wiki pages generally seems fine.
It is essentially the same way as mediawiki.org site.
However, I find some _technically_ questionable points in the
instruction there. The biggest one is the use of ISO 639-3 code for
language identification. Based on my experiences, I see no benefits
to use 639-3 code for this sort of the projects. I believe 639-1 code
(that is the famous two letter language id) is enough for the SL wiki
pages (since it covers almost all major languages.) If the SL wiki
page would be translated into more than, say, 60 languages in a
future, 639-1 code may not be enough, but we can use 639-2 codes in
the case.
... And the author explicitly wrote that the reason to use 639-3 is
"It supports more languages than the previous ISO standards for
language codes. Future proofing basically." I have a feeling that the
author doesn't know what types of languages are added from "the
previous standards." I don't think any of the extra languages are
used to write SL wiki pages in, say, next 20 years...
Should we follow the instruction there?
