Because right now the group IM system doesn't work correctly.
I think we can agree that we need a system that can be accessed and used
both in SL and outside SL. Neither Group IM or IRC provide this at the
moment, nor does the mailing list for that matter.
There are also two different types of communication we have to deal with.
real time collaboration / discussion and non-real time information exchange.
The first type, real time collaboration / discussion, is almost always
lost. No logs are kept, with the exception of some office hours now, and
the only people who have direct benefit are those who participated, lurking
is participation in this context. This type of communication is what takes
place in Group IM, Open chat in SL, walking down the hall at Linden HQ and
IRC as well.
The second type, non-real time information exchange is what happens here on
the mailing list, the wiki, PJIRA, Internal JIRA, blogs, forums, this
information stays around for a long time, but it's not centralized and the
signal to noise ratio is very high on the noise side.
One thing that would be nice to see, and could mostly be done now without
any changes to the source code, are automatically logged conference areas.
Either a full time logging facility with logs generated per day, or an on
demand system that asks the first participant for a title for the session
and creats a log for that discussion. Having a facility to bridge these
conference centers into IRC would be very welcome as well.
