This is exactly what I do. This is a sign.

There should be a "communications HUD" that docks like a toolbar along
the top (or bottom, perhaps it could integrate with normal chat and
those damn buttons along the bottom) with a layout something like this.
This HUD should bump the center of focus of the 3D view down so that it
doesn't feel like your view is getting cut off. Just like how the center
of focus moves to the side when you edit your avatar appearance.

Now make it a slide out bar, that can be easily hidden with one click.
Maybe it could auto-hide. Maybe it could stretch bigger and smaller as
the mouse approaches. OSX, eat your heart out.
