Yes, 1.18 is a step in that direction - how big a step remains to be 
seen. As anyone who's worked on an application that supports 
backwards/forwards-compatibility among file formats and/or plug-ins 
knows, even with a great framework in place compatibility is rarely 
trivial. It becomes a question of how important it is to maintain 
compatibility vs. the resources that will be spent on it.
