Does anyone remember AOL and CompuServe from the pre-WWW days?

They were quite similar to what LL does today. In their time
they were able to build large proprietary network services which
were successful but were closed worlds.

The rest is history, AOL was able to adjust and open to the
outside changes and open standards and became a major player
by the new rules. CompuServe didn't.

I really doubt that the 3D web will be based on SL technology.
Not anymore than WWW is based on Gopher. It's proprietary and
too complex to become a spread-like-wildfire phenomena.

CompuServe/AOL were both big, no doubt about it, but these
explosive quantum leap like acceptances of technology require
different ingredients.
