So it would seem that there are technical reasons for it, and perhaps an 
open alternative could be used while remaining compatible.

IMHO, I'd have liked to have this handled differently. Have LL announce "we 
want to add voice support, and here are the requirements. We're going with 
this closed solution because open ones aren't good enough."

Then wait a bit for comments, and see whether anybody offers to improve an 
existing OSS solution to satisfy the requirements. If so, give a deadline, 
and if it doesn't work, go on with the closed tech until an open solution 
becomes acceptable.

This way, LL could avoid spending time on integrating something that could 
eventually be replaced.
