This isn't entirely true.

Part of the problem with megaprims has to do with the amount of padding
between sim boundaries. It's my understanding that there is a 10m overlap
between sims, where the same collision data is replicated on both sims. This
is part of the reason for the 10m limit.

A linkset may exceed that size, but the individual components do not. Prims
within a linkset are still treated individually in many (but not all) ways.
